FAQ
Questions we actually get.
These are straight answers, the same ones we'd give you directly. If your question isn't here, ask it.
Do I need a broker to sell my business?
No. Brokers do good work, and some of our best conversations have come through one. But you don't need an introduction to talk to us directly. Email us and describe the business in plain terms, and we'll take it from there.
What financials do you need to get started?
Nothing formal for a first conversation. A P&L for the last two or three years and a plain sense of how the business runs tells us more than a full data room at this stage. If we move forward, we'll ask for more, and we'll explain why we need each piece.
Do you keep the employees?
Usually, yes. We buy businesses because the people running them made something work, and we want that to continue. We can't promise every role is untouched forever, no honest buyer can, but we're not buying a business to strip out the team.
What happens after closing?
Less changes day to day than you'd expect. We're not installing new management or renaming the business. We want it to keep operating the way it did when it earned our interest, and we get involved where we can actually help, not everywhere.
How long does closing usually take?
It depends on the business and how ready the records are, so we won't give you a number that isn't honest. What we can promise is that we move as fast as real diligence allows, and we don't stall a deal hoping something better turns up.
How do you value a business?
Off cash flow, mostly. We look at what the business actually generates, how dependable that has been, and what could reasonably threaten it. We won't hand you a multiple in an email. Every business earns its price differently, based on its own numbers, and that's a conversation we'd rather work through with you directly.
Will anyone find out I'm talking to you?
Not from us. We don't tell your landlord, your employees, your competitors, or anyone else that you've reached out. Anything we sign before reviewing real numbers will include confidentiality, and we take it seriously because we'd want the same thing in your position.
I'm not ready to sell. Can I still talk to you?
Yes. Some of the best conversations we've had started years before anyone was ready to do anything. If you're just trying to understand what a sale could look like, or what your business might be worth to someone who plans to keep it, write to us anyway.
Do I need to stay on after the sale?
Not always, it depends on the business. Some owners want a clean break, and that's fine if the team underneath them is strong. Others stay involved through a transition, or longer if they want to. We'd rather fit the structure to how you want to spend the next few years than force a template on you.
What if my business isn't in Colorado?
Colorado and the Mountain West are home, and most of what we look at is close by, but that's a preference, not a rule. If the business is the kind we'd want to own for a long time, we'll travel for it.
Still have a question?
Those are the questions we get most often. Tell us about your business, or ask whatever we haven't covered.
